With over 45 years in the legal profession, Stuart Barnett is one of NSW’s most experienced lawyers in coal mine compensation law. Beginning his career in the Local Courts for the Attorney General’s Department, he transitioned to private practice in 1987 and has since dedicated over 35 years to representing injured coal miners.

Coal mine injury law is a highly specialised field requiring deep legal and practical expertise. Stuart’s strength lies in identifying key issues and guiding injured workers through complex claims, ensuring they understand their rights and the impact on their careers. He regularly appears in the Supreme and District Courts, advocating for miners across the state.

Stuart is particularly passionate about supporting families who have lost loved ones in mining accidents. He has worked with around 90 families, providing legal guidance through compensation claims and coronial processes with empathy and skill.

Beyond his legal work, Stuart is deeply involved in the community. He has held leadership roles in the Australian and Asia Pacific Special Olympics and is an active surf lifesaver. A former president of his local surf club, he now specialises in training lifesaving skills, earning accolades such as Hunter Surf Lifesaver of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and the Australian Surf Life Saving National Medal for continuous service.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Stuart played rugby, cricket, basketball, and ran marathons – until he was forced to hang up his various boots due to younger competitors running rings around him.
